A weekend is all it takes to discover what a genuine sports car does to the pleasure of driving. From Lyon, the roads are right there: the Beaujolais hills to the north-west, the Dombes and Pérouges to the north-east, the Rhône valley and the Pilat to the south. Here is how to plan a weekend in a Porsche or a BMW M3 with Corsiva, from the key handover on Friday to the return on Sunday.

In brief

Five things to know
  • Two Porsches: the electric Taycan (480 hp, 4 seats, from €299 a day) and the hybrid Cayenne Coupé (462 hp, 5 seats, from €450 a day).
  • One alternative: the BMW M3 Competition, 530 hp and 5 seats, from €399 a day.
  • Two days minimum for a rental covering a weekend, with 200 km included per day.
  • Handover and return at Lyon Part-Dieu station (the price is shown when you book), or at your address on quote.
  • The agency is closed on Saturdays: collect on Friday, return on Sunday.

Which car for the weekend

For two people, the choice usually comes down to two personalities; for four, a third car comes into play.

The Porsche Taycan: silence and torque

The Porsche Taycan delivers its 480 hp the moment you touch the throttle, without a sound. Its batteries sit in the floor, giving it a reassuringly planted feel through the bends. It seats four and suits getaways without bulky luggage. From €299 a day, €5,000 deposit.

The BMW M3 Competition: the straight-six

The BMW M3 Competition plays a different tune: a 530 hp twin-turbo straight-six with a real voice, an automatic gearbox and five seats. It is the car for the twisting Beaujolais roads, and the one that takes four friends along. From €399 a day, €6,500 deposit.

The Porsche Cayenne Coupé: four people and luggage

Travelling as four adults, or stretching the weekend into the Alps? The Porsche Cayenne Coupé is the obvious choice: hybrid, 462 hp, five seats (the fifth is smaller) and a generous boot. From €450 a day, €7,000 deposit.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

The agency does not hand over or collect cars on Saturdays: pick-ups and returns take place from 9am to 8pm, Sunday to Friday. A weekend therefore runs naturally from Friday to Sunday. A handover late on Friday and a return at the same time on Sunday make two rental days, so 400 km included.

  1. Friday eveningKey handover at Lyon Part-Dieu station or your address: five minutes for the digital condition report, then your first miles in town.
  2. SaturdayThe big loop of the day, the Beaujolais or the Pilat, with lunch along the way.
  3. SundayA gentler half-day, Pérouges and the Dombes for instance, before returning the car where it was handed over.

Loop 1: the Beaujolais and the Pierres Dorées

Distance
About 150 km round trip from Lyon
Time
A full day
Season
All year, at its best during the grape harvest

North-west of Lyon, the Pierres Dorées area owes its name to the golden, ochre-coloured limestone of its villages. The roads wind between vineyards and hilltop villages before reaching the northern Beaujolais crus.

  • Oingt, about 40 km from Lyon: a medieval golden-stone village, listed among the most beautiful villages in France.
  • The northern crus: Fleurie, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, on narrow rolling roads where the M3 is as agile as it is comfortable.
  • Mont Brouilly, its chapel and its view over the Saône valley, before heading back via Villefranche-sur-Saône.

At about 150 km, the loop fits comfortably within the 200 km included for the day.

Loop 2: Pérouges and the Dombes

Distance
About 100 km round trip
Time
Half a day
Season
Spring to autumn

To the north-east, the Dombes unfolds its ponds and quiet country lanes, perfect for enjoying the Taycan's silence.

  • Pérouges, about 35 km from Lyon: a fortified medieval village with cobbled lanes and its Place du Tilleul.
  • The Dombes ponds, around Villars-les-Dombes and its bird park.
  • Trévoux and the banks of the Saône, for a return to Lyon along the valley.

Loop 3: Vienne, the Côte-Rôtie and the Pilat

Distance
About 160 km round trip
Time
A full day
Season
Spring to autumn

To the south, the Rhône valley leads to the terraced vineyards of the Côte-Rôtie, then the roads climb into the Pilat regional nature park.

  • Vienne, about 35 km from Lyon: the Temple of Augustus and Livia and the Roman theatre.
  • Ampuis and Condrieu: the steep Côte-Rôtie slopes above the Rhône.
  • The Pilat: the bends of the climb to the Crêt de l'Œillon and its views over the valley, before heading back to Lyon.

What about the Alps?

Lake Bourget is about an hour and a quarter from Lyon, Annecy about an hour and a half: a day trip there and back uses a good share of the weekend's 400 km, but it is doable. To make the mountains the heart of your stay, start from Chambéry instead, where pick-up is free: our French Alps and Annecy pages take over from there.

Mileage, charging, tolls

  • Mileage: 200 km included per day, so 400 km for a two-day weekend. Beyond that, the extra 250 km pack is €350; for more, contact us.
  • Charging the Taycan: rapid chargers are easy to find around Lyon and along the main routes. We show you how charging works at handover.
  • Tolls: never included in the rental; French motorway tolls are paid at the booth, by card.
  • Fuel: if you return the car without refuelling, the no-refuel option applies (€30).
  • Additional driver: €20 a day, to share the wheel.
  • Late return: until 11pm, for €120, if you are back late on Sunday.

How a booking works, from documents to deposit, is explained in our guide to luxury car rental in Lyon.
