A week's skiing starts with a road. It can be a pleasure, at the wheel of a prestige 4x4, or an ordeal, on a February Saturday in the valley traffic. Corsiva delivers its luxury cars to the resorts of the Northern French Alps from its agency in Chambéry, at the gateway to the Tarentaise valley. Here is how to plan the drive up.

In short

Five things to know
  • From Chambéry, most of the big Savoie resorts are reached via Albertville and the Tarentaise valley.
  • From November to March, our cars leave winter-equipped at no extra cost.
  • Avoid Saturday changeovers if you can: our handovers run Sunday to Friday.
  • For snow, our two 4x4s: the Mercedes G 63 AMG 2025 and the Porsche Cayenne Coupé.
  • Delivery to Courchevel and Val Thorens at the price shown when you book, elsewhere on quote.

The roads to the resorts

The Tarentaise: the 3 Vallées, Val d'Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Plagne

From Chambéry, the motorway runs to Albertville, then the expressway climbs the Tarentaise valley. At Moûtiers, turn off for Courchevel, Méribel or Val Thorens; further up, Bourg-Saint-Maurice opens the road to Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isère, while La Plagne is reached via Aime. The final climbs are genuine mountain roads, with hairpins and tight bends.

Megève and Haute-Savoie

Megève is reached via Albertville and the Arly valley, or from Geneva along the Arve valley motorway. For Annecy, La Clusaz and the Aravis, see our Annecy luxury car rental guide.

The Oisans, on the Isère side

Alpe d'Huez and Les 2 Alpes are reached via Grenoble and the Romanche valley; the climb to the Alpe counts its famous 21 hairpins. Our Grenoble page covers delivery on the Isère side.

Winter equipment

From 1 November to 31 March, the French Mountain Law (Loi Montagne II) requires winter tyres, or snow chains or socks carried on board, in the mountain municipalities listed by the prefectures. The whole Corsiva fleet leaves winter-equipped during that period, at no extra cost. The exact set-up depends on the car and the forecast: tell us your resort when you book and our team will confirm it. Check the weather and road conditions before setting off; after heavy snowfall, it is better to delay by a few hours than to force the climb.

Saturday changeovers

In season, many chalet rentals run from Saturday to Saturday, and on those days the Tarentaise valley is busy, especially during school holidays. Two tips: set off early in the morning, or move your arrival to the Friday or the Sunday. That is our rhythm too: handovers and returns take place from 9am to 8pm, Sunday to Friday, and the agency is closed on Saturdays. A rental that covers a weekend lasts at least two days.

Which car for the mountains

Two things matter: traction, and room for skis and luggage.

  • The Mercedes G 63 AMG 2025: 585 hp, permanent four-wheel drive, five seats, the benchmark of the resorts.
  • The Porsche Cayenne Coupé: hybrid, 462 hp, all-wheel drive, five seats and a generous boot.
  • The Porsche Taycan and the BMW M3 Competition: also winter-equipped, best kept for the valleys and clear roads. With the electric Taycan, plan charging at the chalet or in the resort.

The 200 km included each day usually cover a stay in a resort; for excursions, mileage packs can be added.

Being driven

After a flight, with children, or simply to enjoy the scenery, the drive up can be made with a Corsiva chauffeur in suit and tie: transfers from Chambéry–Savoie, Geneva or Lyon Saint-Exupéry airports, skis and luggage taken care of, then journeys around the resort and evenings out. By the trip or by the day, on quote. Read the chauffeur-driven G-Class and flying in by private jet.

Your car, delivered to the resort

Rather than driving up from the valley, have the car delivered on the spot. In Courchevel and Val Thorens, the delivery price is shown when you book. In the other resorts of the Northern Alps, Méribel, Val d'Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Megève or Alpe d'Huez, delivery to your chalet is on quote, based on distance. Every resort is listed on our ski resort car rental page. Any question? +33 4 80 81 91 38, 7 days a week, 9am–6pm.
